The idea of leaving fossil fuels underground is situated at the intersection of anti-corporate, post-development and environmental protection activism and is therefore crucial for understanding the complexity of the global fossil fuel regime. As part of the Amsterdam-based research collective Leave Fossil Fuels Underground, Arthur Rempel will take us on a journey through the infamously breathtaking involvement of global financial institutions in the extraction and promotion of fossil fuels and the pro-growth narrative that sustains them. He will show how North-South inequalities in power, control and resources are distributed globally and thereby problematise the structural conditions that enable these processes of continued social and environmental exploitation.
Arthur is a PhD candidate at the University of Amsterdam and researches the interconnections between global financial flows, fossil fuel extraction and what can be done about it. He is phenomenal in understanding and breaking down these complex relations of unequal power and we are overly excited to have him with us! Come and join us for an inspiring talk and lively discussion!
This event is part of the Thursday Talks events series at Global Aktion where every Thursday at 7pm we invite you to our office at Wesselsgade 2, Copenhagen. We gather for talks and panel discussions on topics that range from political analyses of Turkey to the interlinkages between class and climate crisis every week to stir up political debates in Copenhagen and beyond.
