A “grab ‘em by the pussy” mentality and the Peter Madsens and Harvey Weinsteins of the world are not new. Violence against women is a global epidemic – and Denmark is no exception. Every year, around 33,000 women across Denmark experience violence at the hands of current or ex male partners - although only 500 cases are reported annually to the police. Since 2005, over 100 women have been killed by those same hands. For every third woman, fear of harassment and assault is an everyday experience that restricts wellbeing; survivors of violence are more prone to anxiety and suicide.
Join us for a two-part event – a flashmob and a #TændEtLys-event - to shine a light on the magnitude of the issue and mark the International Day of the Elimination of Violence Against Women. The event recognizes both global and local patterns of violence against all women-identifying persons. These patterns are seen recently through the #Metoo hashtag campaign and public debate on the widespread presence of psychological violence. By taking to the streets in solidarity and remembrance, we call for public awareness and media attention to persist and to be matched by policies to prevent future violence and heal our communities. Currently, over half of requests for access to crisis shelters in Denmark are rejected due simply to lack of space and resources. Due to a lack of alternatives, many abused and endangered women return to violent partners. Violence is even more likely to be suffered by those already experiencing social exclusion and economic insecurity, which only deteriorates their chances of finding alternatives and escape routes.
In 1999, the United Nations designated November 25th as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. In recognition of the day, but more importantly, of those who have experienced – or even died from - sexual and gendered violence, we ask you to join us. We want to cultivate a world where this is talked about and responded to in ways that empower survivors and minimize the number of abusers.
To join the flashmob email firstname.lastname@example.org for details on showing up prepared (or come to Rm 21 at the global platform, MS building, Fælledvej on Nov 23 at 18:00) - otherwise just show up and be a supporter!
